The SAFETY4SEA awards recognize ‘the industry’s outstanding practices’. This year’s winners were chosen by a combination of votes from an online poll and a panel of industry experts. Odfjell won in the Sustainability category “for supporting sustainability with ESG reporting and ESG communication”.
In the award announcement, SAFETY4SEA highlighted some of Odfjell’s ESG initiatives:
“Odfjell SE is regarded as one of the leaders in Sustainability within the maritime industry. The company has been awarded for its ESG reporting and ESG communication. Odfjell was one of the first companies to set ambitious climate targets of 50% intensity reduction and to be zero in 2050.”
“In July 2022, Odfjell signed the FUTURE-PROOF initiative in support of human rights. Odfjell was also the first company in the world in the maritime industry to issue a Sustainability Linked Bond. This links ambitious climate targets to financing. Since 2008, the company has run several improvement and efficiency programs, resulting in an almost 30% reduction in carbon intensity. Overall, Odfjell has committed to the ten UN Global Compact Principles, the Sustainable Ocean Principles and a set of targets based on a campaign initiated by the Confederation of Norwegian Enterprise (NHO) on UN’s 17 SDGs. The company is also a member of the ‘Getting to Zero’ coalition and Maritime Anti-Corruption Network (MACN).”
Accepting the award on behalf of the company, CEO Harald Fotland said:
"I'm honored and delighted to accept the SAFETY4SEA Sustainability Award for 2022. It's a great recognition of our continuous work for a sustainable business and for our ESG reporting. I accept this recognition on behalf of the entire Odfjell organization - our colleagues on board our vessels, at our terminals and in our offices worldwide.”
Fotland added:
“Sustainability in Odfjell is about having a long-term perspective on how we do our business. It is about making improvements today that will make a difference tomorrow. Our 108-year history speaks for itself and we plan to be here also for the next 100 years. But to succeed, we need to act responsibly and consider the long-term effects of our business on people, and on the planet."
