Summer Interns at Sea

This summer, seven Norwegian interns have spent their school holiday sailing from continent to continent on board our chemical tankers, gaining relevant practical experience for their continued studies.

Sverre Eikrem and Magnus Mæhl onboard Bow Summer

Sverre Eikrem and Magnus Mæhl have been sailing on the Bow Summer. Both are currently studying Marine Technology at USN and have found this experience to be a valuable extension of their classroom learning.

“We’ve had a very nice and instructive trip. It’s been great to test our sea legs while still in school.”

Simen Guldberg onboard Bow Explorer

Simen Guldberg recently completed his time on the Bow Explorer, a new vessel type for him after working on board our Kværner and Poland vessels during his apprenticeship. His journey started in Durban, took him to Europe, and ended with his disembarkation in Mississippi—three continents in one voyage. Simen describes the experience as "very exciting," adding,

"It was great to return to Odfjell as a cadet and work with such a diverse and youthful crew, both Filipino and Norwegian. I was given a lot of responsibility, including tasks like tank cleaning and work on the bridge, which really challenged me and gave me a much appreciated break from my studies at NTNU in Ålesund, where I’m about to start my second year."

Malin Haugen, who is currently pursuing a master’s degree in Maritime Management, also had a rewarding summer. She took on the role of 3rd officer aboard Bow Sky, an experience she found both challenging and fulfilling:

“This summer, I was fortunate to participate in a memorable voyage starting in Panama and passing through the Panama Canal. We then continued to the USA for loading and unloading before crossing the Atlantic and arriving in Europe. The trip was fantastic, largely thanks to the amazing crew. Although returning to the role of Third Officer after a year away was challenging, the support from both shifts made it super rewarding and educational.”

Malin’s journey with Odfjell began as a cadet in 2021, where she sailed all four of her cadet trips on the Bow Olympus, with a crew that quickly felt like a second family to her. After her cadetship, she served as a Second Mate on Bow Sun. Before starting her master’s program, Malin also had the chance to work as an intern in Ship Management at the headquarters in Bergen, gaining valuable insights into office operations.

Reflecting on her time with Odfjell, she says,

“I am incredibly grateful for the opportunities and experiences I’ve had so far. The support from the management and crew, and the memories I’ve made, are priceless. I look forward to returning to sea after completing my degree.”

Looking back on a summer filled with learning and growth, Eva Storeide, Manager Crewing NWE, expresses her appreciation for the dedication and hard work shown by this year’s interns:

"As they head back to their studies, we wish to thank Magnus, Sverre, Fredrik, Arthur, Adrian, Simen, and Malin for their hard work and commitment this summer. We’re excited that they have all agreed to finish their cadetship with us in the coming years."
